The patient looked like a classic appendicitis - except that the site of maximal pain was in the wrong place.

A large bevy of eminent consultants and even a couple of Professors of Intensive Care swapped possible hen's tooth diagnoses, getting into ever rarer conditions, and musing about case reports, while my friend (schooled in a rather more pragmatic Northern environment) kept muttering something like "atypical location of maximal pain does not rule out the diagnosis".

When the scan was done, lo and behold, appendicitis with an unusual anatomically-located appendix. The patient made a full recovery, but no case reports were penned.PhD scientisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00653179299453839890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-631567898928853978.post-89519573720034713782008-07-29T20:38:00.001+01:002008-07-29T20:38:00.001+01:00Just out of interest - why aren't people presentin...Just out of interest - why aren't people presenting as depressed automatically screened for physical causes of depression eg. anaemia, thyroid disease etc.? Rather to our disadvantage, rare things are disturbingly common at the central London teaching hospitals, but I fear they will not be so at my new DGH!Ms Medichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11878060217355758989noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-631567898928853978.post-65672992311763061142008-07-28T19:54:00.000+01:002008-07-28T19:54:00.000+01:00My immediate thought on this is that the African g...My immediate thought on this is that the African gentleman's relative presumably spoke his language and they discussed all his symptoms in that language.
